2007 was a
busy year for Newland Concert Brass, as they started their 20th Anniversary
year.
In March
the band members took part in the “Celebration of the Arts Day” in the Regal
Theatre. They publicised the work of Newland Concert Brass through a
promotional display and members also got the chance to network with other
West Lothian Arts groups.
Band
members enjoyed a meal and drinks in Bathgate while the Training Band
members enjoyed an evening of Ten Pin Bowling at Deer Park.
Families
and friends of Junior Band members came along to an open rehearsal. Not
only did they hear how members have progressed but they also got the chance
to see the photo display of band members at work!
In April
Newland’s 1st horn player, Amy Summers, took part in the
Forthside Half Marathon and asked people to sponsor her for band funds. She
finished it in 2:20:34.
In May both
the band and the Junior Band took part in a joint concert with the pupils of
Windyknowe Primary School. (see Junior Band Page for details)
The band
took part in two joint Bathgate engagements with The Bathgate Band this
month. The first was leading the "Bathgate Youth Organisations" parade as
part of "Festival Fortnight." The second was with the Torphichen and
Bathgate Pipe Band at the "Beating of the Retreat" as part of the "Bathgate
and West Lothian Highland Games"
The band,
Junior Band, committee members and friends organised fundraising tombola
stalls for both the Bathgate Highland Games and the Street Fair on Sat
26th. A fantastic sum of £394 was raised for band funds. Newland also
provided the musical entertainment for the popular Street Fair in the
evening.
Band
member, Imogen worked hard with both Ros and Alan to compile a "Newland
Recipe Book" full of delicious recipes for band funds.
June saw
the band on the march again in the John Newland’s Procession at the start
of the month. The band took part in the Torphichen Gala Day where they
played for the crowning of the Gala Queen. At the end of the month and on a
what must have been the wettest day in June the band joined forces with the
Barrhead Burgh Band to lead the Gala Day parade in Armadale.
In
September Newland held a ceilidh to celebrate their 20th
anniversary where players (past and present) and their friends and families
enjoyed a night with The Gallivanters Band.
In October,
Newland Concert Brass held a 20th Anniversary Concert at the
Regal Community Theatre in Bathgate. They entertained a full house with a
variety of music from the last 20 years. It was certainly a trip down memory
lane for many of the ex players and conductors who were also in the
audience! Many people also enjoyed viewing the photos and band memorabilia
on display! Band members were delighted to welcome Pam Devereux, the band's
first ever Musical Director, to present the Most Progressed Junior Band
Player award for 2007. This award went to 11 year old, tenor horn player,
Susan Wood. Donations received on the night of the concert were split
between band funds and The Queen Elizabeth National Spinal Injuries Unit
(Southern General Hospital) Glasgow, where an ex member of the band was
cared for after a serious accident.
In November
the band took part in the Remembrance Day Parade and Service in Armadale.
December
finally saw the band playing at the Torchlight Procession and Carol Service
in Bathgate along with Santa and his elves!
Sunday 16th
December was the band’s Annual Christmas Concert at St John’s Church. Guest
artiste was singer John Burgoyne. The band played a varied concert
programme which included well known carols and Christmas favourites such as
“The Snowman” and “The Twelve Days of Christmas.”
