May/June NCB took part in a joint concert with the pupils
from Balbardie primary school. This involved a wide variety of musical
pieces, instruments, and players of all ages.
Thanks to the school for their cooperation in what was a very enjoyable
evening. NCB continued with their fundraising activities and
held a Quiz Night in the Legion and also organised a
tombola and baking stall at the Street Fair in Bathgate. The Junior Band and Beginners Group also
took part in the Bathgate Procession and John Newland Festival with some of
them playing with the senior band for the first timem.
Some members also played with the senior band at Torphichen’s
Centenary Gala where they not only took part in the parade but also played at
the crowning ceremony where First Minister Alex Salmond
crowned the new Queen. April The Beginners Group and Junior and Senior Bands
took part in a sponsored march in Bathgate starting at Newland Academy. The sun came out for them on the day and so
far the band has raised £800 for band funds.
Thanks to all who supported this event.(see Photo Album) March Newland Junior Solo Contest took place in the High
Church Hall in Bathgate. The young
members played a piece of music of their own choice to friends and family. Adjudicator for the day was local music
teacher Anne Crookston who presented 11 year old Colin Waddell with the Best
Beginner award and 12 year old Eve Findlay with the Junior Solo Champion 2008
award. Anne also gave words of
encouragement and support to all members and presented everyone with
certificates. Junior Band tutor,
Robert Fraser also entertained the band and audience with a performance on
tuba during the interval. (see Photo
Album) January Newland Junior Band and Beginners Group both took
part in Activity Evenings where members played their own choice of individual
pieces of music to Robert. They also
took part in fun team building games! Alan Edmond, SBBA Youth Development Officer met
with the Newland Committee recently to discuss the way forward for young
people and brass bands. It was a very
positive and informative meeting and the committee is looking forward to
following up some of the items discussed. |
